Blue Moon edition by Ron Ehrens Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a genuinely fun and entertaining book. I completely got used to the odd looks I got from my fellow pool goers and metro riders due to the fact that I spontaneously busted out laughing on numerous occasions throughout the entirety of the story. It is an unpredictable, yet very human narrative that keeps the pages turning and the laughs coming. This book is a perfect beach or poolside read, preferably with a Red Stipe. I highly recommend it!
LOVED this book!! Blue Moon is written in the first person and for the first half of this book, I felt like the main character could have been easily me...well, a much funnier version of me. I literally laughed out loud in so many places. The second half of the book is the adventure I wish I could have. There is excitement, adventure, romance, mystery. I could not put this book down and am looking forward to more books written by this author!

Hats off for this amazing first novel. Blue Moon made me laugh out loud - on par with pieces from the likes of PJ O'Rourke, and with similar vivid character and place descriptions.
The exploits of Seth, the super-sarcastic main character, are priceless mostly because I could relate so well to them, even though I did not grow up with a Jewish background (though it helps if you have encountered the classic Jewish-Guilt one way or another..at least on Seinfeld via the Costanzas!).
As the other reviews point out, the main character really does represent countless young (say 25-40) adults today who are searching for answers, from the cosmic to the cosmetic. And goofing up royally along the way.
An easy/quick/fun/meaningful read...I hope Ron Ehrens is writing the next one, I want more.
In Seth Gold, I feel like I've met a new friend. I was sorry to see this story end because the main character, irreverence and all, was incredibly enjoyable. He tries to fool you with a façade of self-deprecation, but clearly he knows (and so do we) that he's the smartest one in the room. It's been a long time since I've read something that made me laugh out loud so often. This work reminds of the books I've read by Carl Hiaasen. And it should be as successful. Readers TAKE HEED!
Ron Ehrens has a gift with language. His characters are clearly drawn and character development is the strongest part of his writing. You see each of them and hear them speak. And by book's end, you know them as friends.
As for the plot, well, it's a sort of coming-of-age book filled with self-discovery. He's searching . . . and it's fun to go on the trip to Jamaica. I don't get the super model back in Chicago (and the main character's little moment with her) and find some things to be a little contrived-but truly, I had a feeling of "So What!" For me this book wasn't about plot, it was about character. And I think Ehrens did a brilliant job. Can't wait to read the next one.
I recommend this book for any guy that attended college in the early to mid 1980s, because this story is about someone from our generation.
Ron Ehrens' "Blue Moon" is the story of Seth Gold, a young man trying to overcome his disdain for his Jewish background, move ahead in his career, and find the love of his life.
Part 1 takes place in Chicago, and introduces us to the circle of Seth's friends and family, his attempts to get his dream job as the V.P. at a mutual funds company, and his romance with the beautiful, but very Jewish, Shulie Cohenberg. It's not that Seth doesn't like Shulie, he just can't stand her family and friends. Circumstances both beyond his control and the result of his own doing, leave him at a crossroads in his life, and he decides to run away to Jamaica. There he plans to follow his dream of writing a novel.
Part 2 takes us to Jamaica, and the new life and friends that Seth finds there, as romance and adventure unfold, and Seth faces his greatest challenges.
Things I liked about the book
The writing is full of humor, and I found myself smiling and even laughing out loud at times as I read. The dialogue is crisp and the character interactions have the illusion of reality. The story, while initially character driven, built as the book moved along, but the characters always kept things interesting. The plot ended up having some unexpected twists and turns. There was a definite journey undertaken by Seth, with obstacles, friends, allies, enemies and mentors, although the biggest obstacle for Seth was himself. I also liked that this was a story written by someone of the "tween generation" that is not quite baby boomer and not quite generation X, so I could identify with it.
The descriptions gave me that feeling that I was there in the scene with the characters. Ehrens has a nice touch with detail.
The thing that truly made the book worthwhile was the characters, most of whom were well-drawn, with good qualities and flaws. Seth, Shulie, Emma, Erika, Freedy, Diego, Alfred and even Dugan all had their moments.
Criticisms
The writing is very self-aware at the beginning, trying too hard to be cute and funny. The initial monologue was chatty and there wasn't much plot, just a miserable guy ranting about everyone. Although, with the terrible people he encountered, the ranting was not always unjustified. There was also this attempt at being a Holden Caulfield/Catcher in the Rye type, that I wish new writers would just stop trying right now. Also, the first person narrative seems very close to what I might suspect from Mr. Ehrens. I imagine that there are a lot of similarities between Seth Gold and Ron Ehrens.
Big Bumps
There was one instance of out of point of view foreshadowing (Dugan knew...) that jumped out at me. The book was also full of bad editing, with "repore" instead of "rapport," "shown" instead of "shone," and "Columbia" instead of "Colombia" all appearing more than once, and those are just a few examples. The writer should not be faulted for this. The book could have used better editing.
To conclude, I thought that Seth's defining moment in the book showed excellent emotional range, but he was unemotional when a certain tragedy took place. Maybe he had prepared for it, or didn't really care. You'll have to read the book and decide.
I hope to read another work by Ron Ehrens, to see if he can capture the voice of different characters and prove my Seth/Ron theory wrong.
The first part was a bit long, but laid foundation for underlying conflict. Actually fascinating how it created anxiety for me personally leading up to the resolution. Worth the wait. Jamaica was the favorite. Makes me want to check out Negril...just, maybe without the kids...)
Perfect read for a summer weekend. Funny, insightful, suspenseful and filled with romance. HIGHLY recommend. It will take you away!
